I have just finished reading a landmark book about the natural parts of Toronto, Special Places; The Changing Ecosystems of the Toronto Region (pub. 1999) and the quote above was from the "Discussions and Conclusions" chapter at the end, written by Donald Chant and Henry A. Regier, distinguished zoologists and environmental studies professors at the University of Toronto. Donald Chant must be spinning in his grave. In Toronto, more than a decade after those words were written, the automobile is still very much the dominant species and the "struggle" seems lost. The Toronto Auto Show was on a few weeks back and I'm sure there were similar "cathedrals to the almighty car" on display
