Apart from birdsong and bluegrass music, this group Django Django has that transcendent musical feel that is both pop catchy and genuinely uplifting. The lead singer is Vincent P. Neff (above), originally from Derry City. As soon as he spoke about the song Storm in the video link below, it was obvious he was from Derry and when he started to play the guitar and sing, there was something there that reminded me of that musical self-assurance that is so characteristic of that city. The sound brought back Paul Brady playing so brilliantly in the wee piano room in St Columb's College, the Gilbert and Sullivan musicals produced there, Derrick "Skins" McMenamin, the Undertones, even my own cousin Joe Deighan and his bands around Derry and Letterkenny. The sheer unselfconsciousness of the talented musicians that arise out of that city and its surrounding area is something special. What is it about Derry that can do this? What was it down through history that made Derry and Inishowen such fertile places for music? Dennis Hempson, the great blind harper of Magilligan must have had that sense of musical surefootedness too. Listen here ...

I never thought I'd see the day I'd be singing the praises of Bluegrass music steeped in country and the deep south, but occasioned by the death of Earl Scruggs at 88 on March 28th., it's a discovery of a buoyant happy music with a "flow" to it I never really heard before. I enjoy Irish traditional banjo music as played by people like Joe Diamond whom I know, but Bluegrass just seemed too "hick" ... until now. Here are links to Scruggs (great name!) and others playing ... http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/mar/29/earl-scruggs-bluegrass-banjo-dies?commentpage=last#end-of-comments http://www.vancouversun.com/entertainment/Earl+Scruggs+revolutionary+banjo+picking+style+lives/6379768/story.html |
