Not much to do with Derry today but "Dar-win" has at least a hint of Dair (oak) in his name. I never heard the name Darwin in my 5 years in Derry at St. Columb's but somehow what Darwin 'taught' filtered down in tiny drops of scientific, rational thinking that gradually over those years accumulated into a spirit of scepticism about what that disciplined, but flawed, Catholic education taught about how we came to be here. Here was the man who pieced together the theory of evolution, the pioneer who reluctantly challenged the orthodoxies of his day for all of us and revealed a view of life that has grandeur.
